South Memphis
When the Parkway system was new, some of the most beautiful
homes in Memphis were built along South Parkway. As one of the city's oldest residential
communities, South Memphis' homes are near major traffic lifelines like Lauderdale, South
Third and Mississippi Boulevard.
The area is easily accessible to other parts of the city
through the I-40 loop. Amenities include the many parks scattered throughout the area.
LeMoyne-Owen College, a private, four-year liberal arts school, is also located here.
Memphis' oldest and most famous burial ground, Elmwood
Cemetery, was established in South Memphis in 1852. Some of the city's prominent citizens
are laid to rest here.
