Memphis has come to be recognized as a major center for both
health care and biomedical research. The city and surrounding suburbs are served by 21
major hospitals with more than 7,600 beds. There are more than 2,275 phsicians and 590
dentists serving the Memphis area. Among the facilities are Baptist Memorial Hospital, the
largest private hospital in the world, and Methodist Hospitals of Memphis, the 12th
largest private, not-for-profit hospital in the country.
